Back to the Start” ganz prägnant.

Wow. Drei Songs, drei unterschiedliche Songfarben, wenn man so will.

My message to all newcomers is that resilience and patience is the key to surviving this encounter of ours.

Your album and the six tracks on it go through a real metamorphosis. At which point in development would you say: This is the full Vilnes sound?

Vilnes: “Honestly, to me the “Vilnes sound” is all over the album. I don’t feel like there is one particular point in development that tells the listener “here you have the Vilnes sound”. But if I were to point out a typical Vilnes thing then I guess the underlying melancholic nerve within “Show me the love” and the lyrical playfulness within “A million Smiles” brings the bigger picture from the Vilnes heart/workshop.”

To what extent does „Desire“ fulfill the perfect role as an intro song?

Vilnes: “I think it is perfect as an intro song because, to me at least, it feels unexpected. As if the song itself was designed to be a finisher, but instead you invert the role of the track and make it an opener instead, it sort of messes with my head, in a good way. Also I like the idea of opening a debut album with nothing but me and a piano. It sort of gives the listener a really close encounter with Vilnes the artist, more so than if we brought the whole “shabang”.”

If it weren’t for Corona, in which location, under what conditions would you prefer to perform your album live?

Vilnes: “I know it sounds rather the opposite of ambitious when I say this, but actually I would prefer to perform at some superchill festival somewhere that had a park full of music loving nerds that really knew what the heart behind being a hardworking songwriter sounds like.”

Vilnes: „I would prefer to perform at some superchill festival somewhere that had a park full of music loving nerds.“

What was your first reaction when you realized that the initial dynamic of your first songs from 2019 will come to an abrupt end in 2020 and Corona?

Vilnes: “Well, honestly I didn’t really feel or understand the situation and the consequences that the Corona created until the late 2020’s. I think my first reaction at the time must have been that this will probably pass sooner than later, and then I’ll be back in the saddle moving forwards and upwards. On the other hand I guess I did get a bit spooked by the “brick wall” that the pandemic made since the project had been riding on a wave of accomplishments and awesome concerts just before the outbreak.”

Did you ever panic during the pandemic that your album and thus the beginning of your career might somehow suffer as a result? What message do you have for all newcomers who are now faced with such doubts due to Corona?

Vilnes: “Actually I don’t think I ever really panicked regarding the album. If the album never came to see the light of day in the way that I had hoped, then I’d simply just make a new one. I have both the patience and stamina to do so. I think I got a bit shocked by how my musical career progression suddenly had completely frozen though. Just recently it had been going so smoothly, I could truly sense “the light” at the end of the tunnel. My message to all newcomers is that resilience and patience is the key to surviving this encounter of ours. And that it is in the silence that we really start searching for the sounds. I am not trying to preach here, but simply letting you know what keeps me going with what I have. If my words can help someone else to find a “better” mindset and not to lose all hope during the pandemic then I have already achieved something.”
