Lars Bygdén im Interview über sein neues Album „One Last Time For Love“

Lars Bygdén veröffentlichte am Freitag sein neues Album „One Last Time For Love“. Der schwedische Songwriter Lars Bygdén macht genau dort weiter, wo sein Vorgängeralbum „Dark Compansion“ aufgehört hat. Es war ein musikalischer Abschied von seiner Frau, die 2017 an Krebs starb. „One Last Time for Love“ setzt thematisch dort an, wo „Dark Companion“ aufgehört hat. Für Lars Bygdén ist das Album eine posttraumatische Aufarbeitung der Trauer. Dass sich ein so renommierter Songwriter wie Lars seiner Trauer so öffnet, ist schon stark und gewährt uns als Zuhörer*in auch auf dem neuen Album einen sehr intimen Einblick in seine Gefühlswelt.

Wer jetzt ein Album erwartet, auf dem er in seiner Trauer versinkt. Die neun Songs wirken deutlich wärmer und sie glänzen und strahlen. Man merkt aber allein schon an den Titeln der Songs „A Bird and a Star“ oder „Into the Light“, wie emotional aufgeladen das Album noch ist. Lars wollte zum Vorgänger unbedingt eine Fortsetzung schreiben. Auch und gerade weil er darauf so stolz war. Der Opener trägt allerdings dann doch noch viel Trauer mit sich. Er könnte, aber auch als Abspannsong einer emotional aufgeladenen Serie laufen, mit Happy End.

Interessant finde ich, bei den Songs immer die Lautstärkepegel anzusehen. Da ergibt sich bei eigentlich allen Songs dasselbe Muster: Sie beginnen, leise, bedächtig und werden dann im letzten Drittel meist wirklich lauter, bauschen sich auf. Dieser dramatische Aufbau bereite einem beim Zuhören große Freude. Wir haben mit dem Schweden ausführlicher über das neue Album gesprochen. Es geht auch hier wieder um seine eigene Trauer und wie er den Schmerz in seinen Songs weiter verarbeiten kann.

There are 5 years between your last very emotional album and your new album. Where do you see yourself today and to what extent has your music continued to grow through the grief?

Lars Bygdén: Well I see myself in a less dark place today. When you live with someone that’s in such pain and suffering the way Ulrika did, death is actually a big relief in many ways. And although it was the biggest catastrophe that could happen it was also the only way that the light could come seeping in again.

Is there a side to you as a musician that you have completely rediscovered in the process of grieving and in songwriting?

Lars Bygdén: Maybe, but I think my songwriting has always focused on the darker sides of life. The big difference was that when I wrote the Dark Companion my life was as dark as it gets.

Is „One Last Time for Love“ still a channel for coping with grief and why will your music stay that way forever?

Lars Bygdén: Possibly to some extent I don’t know really. You don’t go and sit down with the guitar and say like „ok, now it’s time for a little grief-coping“. What comes out is what comes out, and for me there’s a lot of other stuff in the songs besides the sorrow and grief. So hopefully I will keep evolving as well as the songs.

Who was the biggest critic for the nine new songs?

Lars Bygdén: That would be my 12-year-old daughter Sally. She really doesn’t like my music and thinks I’m kind of cringeworthy as a musician. So you can say that everything is just as it’s supposed to be.

Did you hit your limits while writing the new songs and if so, was there a moment of strife or hesitation?

Lars Bygdén: There are always moments of strife and hesitation when you make an album. But all in all I think this was easier to make in that regard than the last one.

When you started writing the new songs, what vision did you have in front of your eyes? In which memory should the new album stay?

Lars Bygdén: I didn’t have any grandiose plan when I started writing the album. I think that’s most often the case. You don’t see the whole picture before you start working on it. Only then you can see where the pieces fit, if they fit at all. Hopefully they do in this case.
