Wir haben mit dem französischen HipHop und Rap Duo Cardri gesprochen.

Das Reeperbahn Festival steht an. Vom 19. bis 22. September steht die Musik wieder ganz im Fokus der Hansestadt und dieses Jahr ist Frankreich das Schwerpunktland des Festivals. Da kommt eine ganz schöne Welle an guten Bands auf uns zu sag‘ ich Euch. Ich habe mich schon richtig schwer getan einige wenige Acts rauszupicken, die ich mir in jedem Fall ansehen muss. Und zwar nicht weil sie Rang und Namen haben, sondern weil sie bis dato noch kaum jemand kennt. So auch bei dem Duo Cardri aus Frankreich. Im Schedule auf ihrem Spotify Profil steht, dass sie am 19. September spielen. Werden. Also Stifte zücken und die Band im Kalender markieren. Hier kommt das Interview mit den Boys:

Please just introduce yourselves in three sentences.

Cardri: Cardri is a Hip-Hop/Pop duo currently based in France. Our style is new, but we like to sprinkle some nostalgia into our tracks as well. There’s no tricks involved, it’s just two young boys following their dreams.

You’re „selected“ to play at the Reeperbahn Festival as a special country this year. In which way do you feel honored to come here to Hamburg and burn down a live set?

Cardri: It’s our first show in Germany, so we’re ready to have fun. Our frontman is half German (half American, half German, born in Austria… it’s a long story), so it feels a lot like coming home!

Do you feel a bit as an ambassador for your country to tell all festival people, „Hey, we french people have a lot of great bands too!“?

For sure. There is an abundance of great music in France–amazing artists who are pushing the boundaries. Cardri’s production and instrumentation is handled by Max, the duo’s French half, so we’ve got a lot of love for that country.

More than one year ago you released your first full length project „Girl, It Happened for a Reason“. How do you think your development has been going since then?

It’s been a crazy year. We spent most of our time rehearsing in the north of France, honing our sound and defining our direction. Lots of meetings and industry stuff as well, but those things aren’t as good as being on stage.

If we compare your sound since your first EP in 2016 until today with releasing your new track „Driving off Cliffs“ there is a development from some „rougher“ tunes to a more smooth way of Rap mixed with a little bit of Pop. In which way does releasing your new track and looking back at your older records seem like a „quantum leap“?

It’s exciting. We’re discovering our sound while everyone else is as well. We’re learning about ourselves through our music. That’s what writing songs is all about.

By the way, „Driving off Cliffs“ is a very short song and „Junior Bevil“ too. Is this a stylistic device to keep you short and sweet?

We just figured those songs were done when they were done. Simple as that.

The year is almost over. Have you achieved your goals for 2018?

Man, we’ve been blessed this year. If you knew what were planning for the next chapter you’d be smiling as well.

Have you not achieved one of your original goals you set at the beginning of the year?

Haven’t walked on Mars yet. Still have a few months to go though.

Kürzlich kam mit „Daddy Issues“ ein neues Musikvideo raus. Ein wahres Farbenspiel mit einem Flow der beiden, der seinesgleichen sucht. Für mich definitiv eines der Highlights beim Reeperbahn Festival. Muss ich mir angucken, allein wie die beiden hier ihre Songs aufziehen, das wird ein Fest. Bisschen Autotune, keine Gangster Attitüden, sondern eher mit Witz und Selbstironie. Aber derbe ernst und sie wollen es auch richtig wissen. Wer weiß, vielleicht werden sie ja beim Festival entdeckt.
