CHINCHILLA im Interview über ihre EP und Single „Fingers“

“Fingers” war das erste Ausrufezeichen, das die Pop-Musikerin CHINCHILLA für dieses Jahr gesetzt hat. Das ist nun rund vier Wochen her und die Londonerin zog damit wieder ordentlich Aufmerksamkeit auf sich. “Fingers” folgte auf eine Reihe von Singles, die schon gut Streams gesammelt haben. Die Messlatte und Erwartungshaltung bezüglich neuer Songs lag also enorm hoch. Nicht zuletzt auch, da sie seit Anfang 2020 bei Sony unter Vertrag steht.

Das Thema des Songs ist so gesehen heikel und erinnert ein bisschen an das Märchen des Struwwelpeters. Eine große Schere und abgeschnittene Finger. Doch wirklich märchenhaft soll es hier gar nicht zugehen. Denn CHINCHILLA erzählt vielmehr die Geschichte eines toxischen Ex-Partners. Der Ex-Partner taucht immer genau dann auf, wenn man gerade dabei war sich von ihm zu lösen und ihn fallen zu lassen. Bis es dann zu dieser einen finalen Begegnung kommt: Auge um Auge. Die Frau hat sich verändert und schneidet dem Ex-Partner die Finger ab. Symbolisch betrachtet, damit er sie nicht schon wieder herunterziehen kann. Ziemlich brutal. Aber umso wichtiger auch. Denn es geht um eine starke, veränderte Frau, die sich lossagt und den Mut aufbringt sich endgültig zu lösen.

Darüber hinweg täuscht zunächst einmal die zarte Stimme von CHINCHILLA, bis man im Off hört, dass die Schere aus dem Schaft gezogen wird. Was dann mit dem Bass-Drop folgt, ist genau das: Die Finger werden abgetrennt. Der Kontrast zwischen heller und zarter Pop-Seite und dem düsteren Gewand, zieht einen als ZuhörerIn in den Bann. Ein Grusel und Schauder durchzieht einen. Fesselnd wie ihr grandiose Stimme ist das Gesamtkonstrukt dieses Pop-Songs. Im Video fasziniert sie einen noch dazu mit ihren eigens kreierten Outfits: Bunt, schrill und passend zum gruseligen Unterton des Songs.

“Terms & Conditions” so heißt ihre neue EP und zugleich auch die Lead-Single ihres Werkes. Die sechs Songs auf der EP drücken die gesamte Persönlichkeit der Musikerin aus und zeigen im Grunde sehr deutlich, wie sie als Musikerin tickt. Beim Schreiben der Songs war es ihr wichtig, dass es sich gut anfühlt und auch, dass sie sich von den anderen bisherigen veröffentlichten Songs abheben. Es sollte einfach alles anders klingen und nicht so belastend wie im Lockdown und all den negativen Gefühlen und Ängsten. Völlig frei von Ängsten ist „Million Dollar Multicolour Bliss“, der Song liefert ein smoothes Gefühl, sehr soulig und entspannt mit einem Schnippen im Hintergrund. Pures Summerfeeling! Oder auch „Trigger“, hier agiert CHINCHILLA druckvoller und liefert eine regelrechte Hymne ab. Das macht durch und durch Laune, auch weil die Musikerin das so subtil verpackt.

Zu ihrer zuletzt veröffentlichten Single „Fingers“ haben wir der Musikerin einige wichtige Fragen gestellt. Die Antworten dazu gibt es jetzt im vollständigen Interview mit ihr.

You draw your strength and inspiration largely from strong role models like Beyoncé or Christina Aguilera. In your opinion, how important is it to look for idols and how difficult is it to transfer their actions and work to your own work?

CHINCHILLA: I think it’s important to have role models but definitely only use them for motivation and inspiration, not tutorial/ copying! A lot of my idols are strong powerful amazing solo women with huge voices – it naturally always has been and I think that plays a huge part in who I am today, especially artistically. Again though, I think actually it’s most important make sure you’re not copying the people you most idolise – as those are the people fans will naturally compare you to, so you don’t want to be known as being ‘the next… (whoever)’ or ‘a carbon copy of…’ – you want to make your own mark and be the first person to break a boundary or make people step outside of their comfort zones or start a new movement or genre!

How important is the fun factor in your songwriting despite such a dark song as „Fingers“ and how did you keep the fun despite all the depressing situations around Covid-19?

CHINCHILLA: The fun factor is hugely important, especially in my songs in particular. Although ‘Fingers’ is very dark, it’s also very tongue in cheek. Yes, the subject content is dark, but I think the humour in it comes from its relatability… it’s violent and quite psychotic but, we’re talking about an ex making you so crazy that you want to cut their fingers off… and most of us have been there! I think it’s important for me to keep that vibe in my music – it’s serious but the humour is in the relatability of it. Covid was depressing, yes, but I think songwriting, for me, was the holiday from it all. God, creativity kept me alive! It kept my mind ticking. I remember as a kid when technology and the internet wasn’t as big as it is now and on a rainy day having this feeling of boredom, and having to make my own fun out my own brain – it literally forces you to be creative. Covid was almost like a long day in the rain for me – songwriting was building an indoor spaceship out of furniture and pots and pans.

You once said in an interview that you advise newcomers to live more in the present and not think too much about the future. Doesn’t that actually create fear if you don’t dare to look into the future?

CHINCHILLA: Haha I guess so but I believe constantly worrying about the future is most where fear and anxiety comes from. A long term plan and setting goals is definitely important but worrying about the future is a waste of time – it won’t change anything and will just cause you stress and wrinkles… Taking your career day by day, but reaching toward long term plans… that’s what I’d say is most efficient.

In „Fingers“ you literally cut off the fingers of an ex-partner. When creating the song and then also during the release, were you afraid what the reaction to such a brutal core topic would be?

CHINCHILLA: To be honest… I genuinely wasn’t thinking about that at all! Everyone I had played the song to had loved it so far and I think it’s clear that it’s a metaphor – to be honest, if you look at the subtext I’m only saying what other songs have said 1000 time’s – ‘stop crawling back to me messaging me when you see me succeeding and moving on, stop dragging me down and stop dragging others down, you make me so angry that I feel crazy’. That’s what the song is saying really, I guess just through a slightly more shocking metaphor… but if we don’t take risks and push boundaries in our songwriting then what are we writing songs for!

If you look back over the last 12 months with lockdown, contact restrictions, no concerts, etc.: To what extent does „Fingers“ also act like a kind of liberation for you?

CHINCHILLA: I think we all went a little mad with lockdown and covid and all the 1000’s of restrictions didn’t we. ‘Fingers’ was a nice refreshing bit of crazy that I probably needed to get out of my system yes!

After such a pandemic, there are certainly people who have difficulties in being socially surrounded by other people again. To what extent can you, as an artist and e.g. live gigs, contribute again to making the world a bit more „social“?

CHINCHILLA: I’m going to be gigging a lot again for sure – I have a few festivals coming up this summer which I can’t wait for! I think being social again will be difficult for people, myself included, but it’s definitely not something to shy away from – I can’t wait to get back out there and be in a crowd of strangers smiling and watching people dancing at their happiest. I think as an artist it’s important to do some more small intimate shows too – maybe that’ll help ease people back into socialising a bit more.
