BLANKS mit neuer EP im Review

BLANKS präsentiert euch seine EP “Cheap Sodas and Ice Cream Kisses”.

Um es vorweg zu nehmen: Die EP ist eine absolute Sommer-Nummer. Fluffige Electro-Pop Songs gleiten über den sommerlichen Abendhimmel, durch die laue Sommernacht und irgendwie auch über die lang ersehnte Sommerparty am Pool mit coolen Drinks. Die Party muss dieses Jahr zwar entfallen, nicht aber der Songwriter-Hochgenuss seiner Zusammenstellung seiner bisher beliebtesten Songs.

Simon de Wit, der hinter BLANKS steckt, schafft es ganze 8 Tracks auf die EP zu packen, die wie ein langer Trip mit dem Bike durch die Sommerhitze wirken. “Dance Alone” lädt ein zum Cruisen durch die Straßen. Hier reihen sich smoothe Gitarrenriffs und ein funky Electro Sound ein. Flotte gute Laune ist hier garantiert. Aber ohne auf die sonst in dem Genre übliche Ohrwurm-Nummer zu machen. BLANKS träumt von Stränden, Sonnenstrahlen, davon wie es ist den gesamten Tag am Strand abzuhängen. Und dazu sind die Songs auch gemacht. Die perfekte Reiseuntermalung, wer also noch an den Strand fährt. “Seaside” ist der Inbegriff eines Songs am Strand. Gut, der Titel macht es uns als Zuhörer auch schon leicht. Hier können wir erstmal alle Sorgen und Alltagsgedanken vergessen lassen.

Musikalisch fühlt sich der holländische „sonny boy“ in seiner geliebten Ära des Dance/Pop der 80er Jahre am wohlsten. Euphorisch und energiegeladen geht er ans Werk. Was den leichten Nachteil hat, dass man nach den 8 Songs leicht erschöpft zurück in seinen Liegestuhl sinkt.

Die EP widmet sich allen Zuhörer*innen, die dieses Jahr keinen großen Urlaub am Strand verbringen können. BLANKS nimmt uns in teils sehr leichtperligen Songs mit, macht das Kopfkino an und hinterlässt eine regelrechte Sehnsucht nach Erholung.

Your new EP is full of summer feelings, a good mood, and lots of moments of wellbeing. With such tracks, don’t you always run a bit of a risk that the songs will lose depth if they are too positive?

BLANKS: I believe sad tracks are usually perceived as having a deeper meaning since they appeal to more intense emotions, but happy songs can really lift your spirit when you’re feeling down. I get hundreds (if not thousands) of messages from people who tell me my songs have helped them get through a rough patch. I feel like if you can accomplish that with your songs, there is enough depth. 🙂

Although your sound on the EP is heavily geared towards the summer season: why do you think you are leaving us a timeless record here?

BLANKS: Most of my personal favourite songs are strongly tied to summer memories or feelings, and whenever I listen to these songs it feels like opening a time capsule with memories and nostalgic feelings, and I love that. I get so many messages from fans about the songs on this project being the soundtrack of their summer, holiday, or relationship, it’s amazing! And I believe that whenever a song is tied to a memory or feeling like that, it will be a timeless record for that person.

In one fell swoop, Corona made it a difficult year for all of us. What have you learned personally about yourself in this time of crisis?

BLANKS: The last few months before Corona were a rollercoaster. A lot of really exciting things happened in a short period of time, but afterward, I realised I should take more moments to reflect on everything that is happening and make an effort to consciously enjoy those moments. So I’ve been practicing that recently, and I can say I’m getting better at it! 🙂
