Der Lette Chris Noah gilt in seiner Heimat als eines der größten Songwriter Talente überhaupt. Nicht verwunderlich, dass er bei einem Major Label gesigned ist. “The Line” ist dabei auch noch die allererste Single des Songschreibers und mit dieser Single feierte er im Sommer seinen Einstand zusammen mit einem Musikvideo, das wir euch hier vorgestellt haben. All die Hoffnungen, die es ihn gibt, belegt er jetzt mit dem Release seiner EP “Distance”. Der EP-Titel spricht Bände und hält im Grunde genommen das gesamte Jahr mit Corona fest.

Fünf Tracks veröffentlicht der Lette auf der EP. Mit dabei ist auch eine Akustikversion seines Songs “This Is The Night” und eine stripped Version des 2018 erschienenen Tracks “River”. Also sind es summa summarum 7 Tracks.

Was erwartet euch auf dieser EP? Mit Sicherheit nicht einfach eine x-beliebige 100te Version eines Songwriters. Denn Chris Noah versucht durch sein Songwriting, das er schon früh im Kindesalter ausprägte herauszustechen. Sein Vater prägt ihn bis heute. Dadurch, dass er Berufsmusiker ist und seine Mutter Gesangslehrerin war er immer schon von Musik umgeben. Es dauerte allerdings einige Zeit, bis er die Leidenschaft zur Gitarre entdeckte. Davor war Sport viel wichtiger. Mit seinem Bruder ging die Karriere dann erste Schritte. In Lettland landeten sie einen Hit und es folgte direkt eine neue Single. Das war alles im Jahr 2016. Also vor vier Jahren und seitdem hat sich viel verändert, wenn wir jetzt auf seine EP blicken. “Tell Me Something More” ist ein großes theatralisches Stück und baut sich wirklich mit großen Gänsehaut-Momenten auf.

Ein großer Dreh- und Angelpunkt in den Texten von Chris Noah ist natürlich die Beziehung als solches. Liebesbeziehungen und die nicht ganz einfachen Wendungen darin. Wenn es darum geht lieber zusammen zu bleiben, als sich zu trennen. Wenn die Angst vor dem Schmerz sich zu trennen größer ist, als die Vernunft, dem nimmt sich Noah an und die Theatralik ist in jedem Moment egal ob er etwas ruhiger oder herzzerreißend ist herauszuhören. Damit erfindet er natürlich nicht das Rad neu. Über Liebe, verlorene Beziehungen etc. haben schon vor ihm zig Songwriter getextet. Bleibt also die Frage, wie hebt er sich wirklich ab?

Was mir beim Hören vor allem aufgefallen ist, ist die Dichte innerhalb seiner Songs. Von der Seite drängt sich eine Wärme auf und durch seine leicht mainstreamige Intonation der Vocals kommt uns Chris Noah schon recht nahe. So schafft er es uns auf vielen Ebenen mitzunehmen. Sowohl wenn es eher in den Mainstream abdriftet oder wie in “Distance”, der Titeltrack seiner EP. Er begnügt sich mit seiner Gitarre und ist eine Liebeserklärung an eine Verflossene. Auch hier garantiert er uns wieder Herzschmerz pur.

It wasn’t until you were 17 that you really realized that music and songwriting was something of fundamental importance to you. Why do you think it always takes a while before we discover and use what is good for us?

Chris Noah: In my opinion, only on rare occasions, one can find something he loves and is really good at, right away. You have to try different things in order to tell whether you actually like it and that takes time. Then you have to determine if you are good at it, and that takes time too. Plus, the circumstances in which something is presented to you play an extremely important part. For example, I did music from age 6 to 12, and after graduating from music school, I figured that I’ll never play music in my life (without even mentioning singing). At the time, I studied academic material and approached guitar playing and music in general from that perspective. Back then these were the circumstances I had to deal with and that was the only angle I was able to look at that.
After 5 years, it was totally different – it was my own initiative, not my parents like it previously was, and the idea of music had totally turned around. So, I picked up the guitar and started learning again – this time from musicians I listened to and looked up to. Obviously, music did not change, but my perception did.

Your music and the new songs on your EP are very emotional. If the EP were a certain emotional state, which one would it be and why?

Chris Noah: I’d say it is an honest retrospect of the past. Writing this material wasn’t as emotional as it was a truthful and rational analysis of my past relationship. I was way past the point where I am really sad and depressive/heartbroken, so I was able to look back at this from a fresh point of view and be more constructive. It was different from any other song I’ve written, therefore challenging in a good way.

Corona will affect the playing of live concerts for even longer. What are you longing for for the new year and what has this year taught you?

Chris Noah: Yes, it’s been pretty bad, we had a couple of big events planned like a headline show in Palladium Riga, which was cancelled. It should have been my biggest headline show to date, but sadly we weren’t able to play it. And some other local festival appearances and shows outside my home country went down the toilet. Plus, the initial release of “Distance” EP happened exactly in the midst of the first wave of COVID, so that was interesting. But to be honest, the most important thing this year was signing with Made In Baltics / Sony Music Entertainment and handing over the management part to Every Little Thing. It honestly changes so much, when you have professionals behind your back, it has allowed me to focus on new music. I’m sure it’s pretty much the same for almost every musician at this time – we’re longing for festivals and live shows in general, especially the ones where the audience can stand and move around, dance and just enjoy themselves as much as they want to. To see people happy and to be in that moment with them!
