Arny Margret spricht im Interview über ihr Debütalbum und die Natur; Fotocredits: Anna Maggy

Die Natur ist gewaltig schön und Arny Margret „steht“ mittendrin. Es ist endlich raus, das Debütalbum „they only talk about the weather“ und das Wetter spielt dabei eine ganz entscheidende Rolle. Denn die Isländerin lässt sich beim Songwriting stark vom Wetter, der Natur und den Landschaften inspirieren. Arny Margret hat den Sprung geschafft, würde ich mal behaupten. Als Support von Leif Vollebekk hat sie sich eine größere Fangemeinde erspielt. Im Februar erschien dann auch noch ihre erste EP, es war der erste Schritt hin zum ersten Album.

Das gesamte Album ist eine emotionale Fahrt und sie nimmt uns mit auf ihre Reise. Es geht um ihre Kindheit in der Schule, wenn sie aus dem Fenster ihres Studentenwohnheims gestarrt hat, auf Tour war oder eben genau in diesem Moment ihre neue Platte präsentiert. Das alles wird in ein poetisches Gewand gewickelt und wird zu einer phänomenal guten Indie-Platte. Es ist ein Album über Einsamkeit, ihre Existenz und sie macht das auf einfühlsame Art und Weise. So arrangiert sie ihre Songs überhaupt nicht minimalistisch im Stile, dass sie nur alleine auf ihrer Gitarre Akkorde schwingt. Zusammen mit ihrem Musikvideo zu „the world is between us“ stimmt alles: Die Landschaftsaufnahmen, sie wie sie aus dem Fenster blickt und die Stimmung aus ihrem Song. Es wirkt schon fast düster.

Ihre Gefühle werden zu Worten und schmiegen sich an ihre Gitarren und Streicher Arrangements. So darf in zwei Tracks auch eine Band mitmischen und das macht den Sound direkt fülliger. Wobei sie ja sonst eher das Einfache bevorzugt. So glitzern immer wieder kleinere Details auf und Arny lässt uns oft auch in ihrer Offenheit die Songs selbst interpretieren, was wir darin Neues entdecken. Ihre Songs dürfen dabei zuckersüß, bitter und heimelig zugleich sein.

Arny, the weather reflects your songs in a certain way. How does that make your tracks on the album very „weather sensitive“?

Arny Margret: „I live in the Westfjords of Iceland and I have lived there my whole life, I guess it comes from there. The weather there can be very harsh, the winters are cold and full of snow and you really feel the extremes. I like the weather but it can also be scary at times, you can find weather in so many different things.“

You seem very thoughtful on your album. You’re also processing a lot from the past. Are you very strict with yourself about working through things from the past? And do you see the bad things as a lesson or do you accept them?

Arny Margret: „I think we all need to work on ourselves and our past, because if we don’t do it we get stuck in it. I think this album is a way for me to not get stuck. I think I see bad things as a lesson and accepting them is a way to move forward, that can take time but it always feels better afterwards. You learn from everything and you get stronger and wiser with time.“

You also recently played a tour alone for the first time. As you say yourself, you learned a lot. Don’t you get to a point at some point where you’re no longer receptive to anything new?

Arny Margret: „I don’t think so, there is always something new in everything. New people, new places, new surroundings, new food. I’m always adjusting.“

Constantly new impressions are exhausting. But always lying outside of the comfort zone right?

Arny Margret: „Yes, it takes a lot of energy, but it’s always pushing me more and more out of my comfort zone. I’m sort of an introvert so after meeting a lot of people I like to be alone, take a nap or go for a walk if I’m not too tired.“

„they only talk about the weather“ is a fairly slow, rather leisurely album. What expectations do you have of your debut album, how the listeners will deal with it?

Arny Margret: I just hope people like it, maybe find some kind of calmness in it. But I can never really know how people will take it, I think it will always feel very different from how I feel it.“

You also take a lot of time for the descriptions of the landscape, e.g. When you look at a landscape, do you often see more detail than other outsiders do? And how does that shape your songwriting?

Arny Margret: „Maybe, I’ve never thought about that. I write about what I see or feel. I actually think I’m more used to the landscape than outsiders, they think it’s so majestic and beautiful. I’ve seen these things my whole life, I know both the dangers and the beauty of it. The detail, maybe, but I think I forget it sometimes, maybe I write about it without knowing. I use my surroundings when I’m writing, so it definitely shapes my songwriting in a way.“
