MOONRIIVR ist eine Newcomer- und Allstar-Band zugleich. Direkt im Opener der Platte „Blonde Hair Now“ wird einem klar, dass man eine kleine Zeitreise vor sich hat. So als würden sie mit all ihren Instrumenten in den Proberaum tapsen. Dass auch ja keiner Notiz von ihnen nimmt. Nur damit sie es sich so richtig gemütlich machen können um „Midnight at the Garden Hotel“ zum Besten zu geben. Das Pressebild fängt genau diesen Moment ein, wie sie dort im Kreis sitzen und jammen. Wenn sie nicht aus Kanada kommen würden, würde ich behaupten, dass das aus den Südstaaten kommen müsste. Aber MOONRIIVR kommen aus Toronto und legen mit „Vol. 1“ ihr erstes gemeinsames Album auf.

Sometimes I want to make up completely fictional narratives.

Im Frühjahr 2020, zu Beginn der Pandemie, hatte Gavin Gardiner – bekannt als Frontmann der Juno-nominierten Indie-Folk-Band The Wooden Sky und als Produzent und Tontechniker in den All Day Coconut Studios für Künstler wie Fiver, Jason Collette, Leanne Betas und Sake Simpson – etwas mehr Zeit und nahm die Einladung seines Freundes „Champagne“JamesRobertsonan, ihn auf seiner Familienfarm nördlich von Toronto zu besuchen. Gardiner verleiht auch MOONRIIVR seine Stimme.  Robertson, der normalerweise als Lead-Gitarrist mit Künstlern wie Lindi Ortega und Dwayne Gretzky auftritt – und Gardiner treiben sich schon seit vielen Jahren in der Musikszene Torontos herum, aber noch nie ist ein gemeinsames Projekt der beiden entstanden. Bewaffnet mit einem alten Tascam 388 Tonbandgerät, einer Nylonsaitengitarre und einigen Mikrofonen machten sich die beiden an die Arbeit und merkten schnell, dass das Projekt die Form von etwas ganz Besonderem annahm. MOONRIVVR war geboren.

Die Band aus Toronto wirkt wie aus der Zeit gefallen. So als würden sie einen Soundtrack für Johnny Cash produzieren. Oder für einen Wild West Doku Mehrteiler. Durch die 12 Tracks hat man sich nicht so schnell durchgehört. Immer wieder kommt man in Versuchung den letzten Track nochmal anzuwerfen, weil er so gut in die Winterzeit und Gemütlichkeit gepasst hat. Aber man will weiter reisen auf dieser Platte und den Sound aufsaugen.

You released your first album with “Vol. 1”. But it sounds like you haven’t been doing anything else the whole time… where does that come from? 

MOONRIIVR: „Well to be fair we have been doing a quite a lot!  The reason we called this Volume 1 is because it is a reflection of the work we did during the pandemic.  Also I like the idea of calling it Volume 1 because I think there will be a lot more work to come.“

When we listen through your tracks, you get the feeling that you’re traveling back in time to the 60s. To what extent do you have a special soft spot for the old sounds? 

MOONRIIVR: „I like things that sound good, the sounds that sound best to me some people may call old.  Hard really when the history of recorded music isn’t even 100 years old to call it old.  I think when we look back at this period MOONRIIVR will be considered part of the same era as artists as far back as Elvis and Les Paul and as far forward as things we haven’t even heard yet like Drake’s sons first album or something.“

Can pop also sound “old”? 

MOONRIIVR: „Yeah why not!  Bruno Mars did it.“

The first ideas for the songs came about between you Gavin and James on a farm before we went back to Toronto. What experience from your time on the farm would you not want to miss and why is „Vol. 1“ not an album for country bumpkins? 

MOONRIIVR: „The farm just gave us a place to escape the city, the pandemic lock down was in full swing at that point and being in the city was stressful.  It’s not a country record (not that I don’t love country music!) but there were elements that were recorded in a barn.  Harvest was recorded in a barn but so was Transformer Man and Computer Cowboy!“

Thematically you don’t really want to mince words. I think that’s very good. Do you have to confront your listeners with reality these days or do you tend to protect your fans? 

MOONRIIVR: „I don’t think it’s my job to coddle anyone, I just want to sing about my experience. And sometimes I want to make up completely fictional narratives, sure there’s a piece of me in there but it’s fun to imagine you are someone else!“

Would you agree that „Vol. 1“ doesn’t fit into the 21st century at all?

MOONRIIVR: „Nah I think it fits right in next to Lil’ Yachty, Hank Williams, Bily Holiday and Beyonce.“
