Im Interviewfeature stellen wir dir heute das Debüt von J Mahon vor. Manchmal wünscht man sich ja, dass man gewisse Dinge wieder zum ersten Mal in seinem Leben tun möchte. Küssen zum Beispiel. Oder vielleicht sogar so etwas wie Fahrradfahren. Dieses Gefühl etwas zum ersten Mal zu tun löst ja bekanntlich Ängste. J Mahon hat nun mit „Everything Has A Life“ sein erstes Album herausgebracht, obwohl es streng genommen längst nicht das erste Release von ihm war. Denn vorher war er unter dem Namen FKA Emerson Snowe unterwegs. Jetzt ist es aber seine erste Platte mit diesem Künstlernamen. Es muss sich erfrischend und aufregend anfühlen. Und nervös war er auch, als sein Album am 08. September das Licht der Welt erblickte.

I wanted to feel something, whether it was joy or sadness. I teared up when I did the listening party for the record, in the last song I got emotional.

13 Tracks hat er auf die Platte gepackt und es fühlt sich wie das erste mal gehen an. Dennoch ging J Mahon mit einem Selbstvertrauen in sich selbst an die Produktion der Titel. Mit dem Ergebnis ist er mehr als einfach nur happy. Die Platte ist aber ja dennoch etwas komplett Neues für ihn und stellt den Status Quo für ihn als Musiker dar. Das ist das wo er gerade steht. Aber er steht nicht sondern bewegt sich weiter. So arbeitet er schon an seinem zweiten Album. Was für ein Drive!

Wer das Album aber zum ersten Mal hört, wird erfrischt sein von den Klängen. Und das obwohl er ja eigentlich extrem viel Erfahrung an den Tag legt. Genau diese Austariertheit lässt das Album scheinen und glänzen. In Nord-Queensland, Australien aufgewachsen, ist Jarrod Mahon jemand, der sich mutig neuen Unternehmungen stellt. Und das fühlt man durch und durch in seinen Songs wie „Death of the Ladies Man“. Nachdem er sich 2019 von seinem früheren Plattenlabel getrennt hatte, entschied sich Mahon, vollständig unabhängig zu handeln, und zog im selben Jahr nach Berlin. Extrem mutig! Klar J Mahon erfindet nicht alles neu und dreht jetzt den Indie-Sound auf links. Es schunkelt, flitzt und treibt manchmal ganz lässig umher. Ohne seine Gitarre geht dabei gar nichts.

Im Interview sprechen wir jetzt über das Album, seinen Sound, die Freude über seinen Debüt-Release und vieles mehr.

With “Everything Has A Life” your very first solo album was released on September 8th. How big was the excitement and excitement
before the release? Actually, given your experience with releases, you’ve become more seasoned with releases…

J Mahon: „I was really looking forward to the release, it’s my first album so I was nervous to have it out, but i’m quite confident in it as it’s an album that i’m very happy with. I have released a lot of music in the past, but nothing under my own name or a large piece of work which I have recorded in a studio like this.“

What is your minimum goal with your first long player and how do you measure yourself as a musician?

J Mahon: „Ideally I would just like people to give it a listen and decide for themselves if they’re into it or not. I think it’s a good indication of where I am at the moment and shows my past influences. I am always writing and recording, i’ve already started recording the second album. Whether ‘Everything Has A Life’ picks up or not, i’ve still got more songs, so i’m not too worried about it.“

During the creation process of the album and when everything was completely mixed, it almost reads as if you were leaving an incredibly valuable maturation process of your own self behind you. Can you still remember the moment when you realized: Oh wow, I’m changing a lot here… and it’s a good thing?

J Mahon: „I’m definitely not leaving a maturity and growth behind me, I would say the opposite. I had to go through certain things to get to where I am now, I just felt like with the Emerson Snowe pseudonym it had been around too long with not enough releases or shows. I was halfway between Australia and the UK, so I wasn’t fully able to commit to the live aspect properly, but now that i’m located in Europe I finally have the opportunity to take on things and do whatever shows I can and be around. Change is a good thing, and something I seem to do a lot.“

It seems as if you have gained a completely different, new and refreshing perspective on the world. To what extent is this reflected in your new songs?

J Mahon: „Totally. I think within the last 2 years I really committed to my sobriety and being clean, before that it was back and forth and was quite a lot to handle. Getting clean made all of this possible. That doesn’t mean that I am over my addictions or anything, something could happen any day, but I just have to stay clean for one day at a time. There’s no excuse big enough to go back to my old ways.“

You seem very triumphant in a way on your new songs. With all the negative developments around you, to what extent does it not feel
wrong that you can just stand there and cheer like in “Death of the Ladies Man”?

J Mahon: „I’m not sure if I totally understand the question. A lot of my songs on this record are bittersweet, when I write the lyrics I do it improvised, I press record and then mumble whatever words come to my head, most of the lyrics that come out of me stick without any rewriting or anything. Death Of The Ladies Man is very satirical, and having the triumphant feel to it adds to the irony I suppose. But then again, I just write, I don’t censor my stream of consciousness too much at all. It just is what it is.“

The goal of your new album was to make you cry… Were they tears of relief or joy? Or even completely different ones?

J Mahon: „I wanted to feel something, whether it was joy or sadness. I teared up when I did the listening party for the record, in the last song I got emotional because I had come a long way emotionally and in my songwriting. I was just happy with what myself and my friends around me had created in this full length album. Nothin’ to be ashamed of by being your own fan.“
