Your live performances are often described as an essential part of experiencing your music. How do you translate that raw energy and passion from the stage into a studio recording, especially on Cry Alone?

Dawn Brothers: „We try to keep things as real as possible in the studio. That means recording live — vocals and instruments all together— so we capture the natural feel of the moment. We also work with producers who really understand live bands and know how to bring out that raw energy. Another big thing for us is not overthinking a song before recording. We like to keep it raw and a bit naïve, so the magic doesn’t get lost.“

You’ve been touring the world for the past eight years, from Hungary to South Africa. Do you see touring as a necessary part of being a modern band, or was it more of a personal desire to explore and absorb new influences?

Dawn Brothers: „For the kind of music we make, touring is a must. We’re not the type of band that’s going to top the charts, so the best way to reach people is to go out and play, everywhere we can. Plus, there’s something special about connecting with an audience in real-time. That’s where the real magic happens.“

The album Cry Alone takes a more introspective and melancholic approach compared to your previous albums. What led you to explore these deeper, more reflective themes this time around?

Dawn Brothers: „It wasn’t really a conscious decision, it just kind of happened. The world feels pretty confusing and dark at times, and that inevitably seeps into the music. Maybe there’s some personal grief in there, maybe some heartbreak. Sometimes you just need to let those emotions out through a song.“

Your sound has always been rooted in folk rock, blues, and soul, but on Cry Alone, we also hear jazz elements and even a touch of Beyoncé-inspired influence. How did these influences find their way into your songwriting and recording process?

Dawn Brothers: „We’ve always loved jazz and actually played in jazz bands before. So, those influences have always been there in some way. The Beyoncé reference comes from Bodyguard on Cowboy Carter, that track was done with Raphael Saadiq, and we’re huge fans of his work. It’s cool to see how different inspirations can blend into our sound.“

You’ve worked closely with producer Paul Willemsen again for this record. What makes this collaboration so special, and how did his input shape the final sound of Cry Alone?

Dawn Brothers: „Paul is just incredibly intuitive. He’s all about feeling whether a song is alive, has soul, and is breathing. He also knows a ton about music, and with his go-to engineer, Kasper Frenkel, they really know how to make us sound organic, but still punchy and raw, kind of like The Beatles on the White Album, or like a modern indie folk rock recording by like Big Thief. He just gets what we’re going for.“
