Mit ihrem verträumten Mix aus Folk-Pop und Americana gehören We Met In June zu den spannendsten neuen Stimmen der norwegischen Musikszene. Das Duo, bestehend aus dem Paar Sara Rose Zadig und Gjest Ingeson Kvåle, verbindet Nostalgie mit Frische und greift dabei auf Einflüsse von Fleetwood Mac bis Kacey Musgraves zurück. Ihr Debütalbum Loving Living (2024) brachte ihnen hervorragende Kritiken und den prestigeträchtigen Preis „Breakthrough of the Year“ bei den Luttprisen ein. Nun erscheint mit Going Home (seit 19. September erhältlich) ein Werk, das die Hörer:innen auf eine intime Reise an Norwegens Westküste mitnimmt – zu Fjorden, Bergen und Erinnerungen.

Von verschiedenen Wegen zu einem gemeinsamen Klang

Die Geschichte von We Met In June begann 2018 bei einem Talentwettbewerb, bei dem Sara und Gjest noch als Solokünstler auftraten. „Wir waren eigentlich schon zwei Jahre zusammen, bevor wir begonnen haben, miteinander zu musizieren“, erzählen sie. Einige Anläufe brauchte es, bis ihre musikalischen Welten ineinandergriffen – doch dann „explodierte“ es förmlich.
Sara wurde stark geprägt von US-Folkrock der 60er- und 70er-Jahre – Fleetwood Mac, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Neil Young – während Gjest zwischen akustischer Musik wie Alison Krauss und Nickel Creek sowie 80er-Rock aufwuchs. Aus dieser Mischung entwickelte sich ihr Markenzeichen: träumerischer, organischer Pop mit Wurzeln im Folkrock und Americana.

Going Home – Sehnsucht, Zugehörigkeit und bittersüße Nostalgie

Während das Debüt Loving Living noch die helleren Seiten des Lebens und der Liebe feierte, ist Going Home nachdenklicher. „Für uns bedeutet Zuhause unsere Familien, einander und unsere Heimatstädte“, so das Duo. Nach Jahren in Oslo zog es sie zurück an die Westküste Norwegens – näher an ihre Wurzeln, ihre Familien und die Landschaft, die sie geprägt hat. Die Songs erzählen von Liebe, Selbstzweifeln und Nostalgie, immer mit Blick auf die Menschen und Erinnerungen, die ein Zuhause ausmachen. Ein zentrales Element ist die Natur. „An der Westküste, umgeben von Bergen und Fjorden, haben wir eine tiefe Verbundenheit zur Natur entwickelt“, sagt Sara. Spaziergänge am Morgen, Sonnenuntergänge oder stille Momente mit der Gitarre fließen direkt in ihre Musik ein und verleihen den Songs Atmosphäre und Tiefe.

Ein Klang voller Wärme und Klarheit

Für den letzten Schliff arbeiteten We Met In June mit Grammy-nominiertem Mixer Marc Daniel Nelson (Fleetwood Mac, Jason Mraz, Joni Mitchell). Sein Fingerspitzengefühl brachte den Songs jene Wärme und Klarheit, die das Album so zeitlos wirken lassen. „Er achtet auf die kleinsten Details und schafft es, den Sound superklar, warm und zeitlos klingen zu lassen“, erzählen die beiden.

Musik als Verbindung und Trost

So melancholisch Going Home auch sein mag – im Kern geht es um Trost und Verbindung. „Wir hoffen, dass die Hörer:innen mit einem Gefühl der Geborgenheit und Nähe aus dem Album gehen“, sagen Sara und Gjest. Musik war für sie schon immer ein Weg, mit Emotionen umzugehen – und genau das möchten sie mit ihren Songs weitergeben.

Der Blick nach vorn

Von Auszeichnungen über Touren in Skandinavien und Deutschland bis hin zum neuen Album: We Met In June haben in kurzer Zeit viel erreicht. Doch Going Home ist für sie erst der Anfang. „Wir fühlen uns heute als Künstler:innen sicherer denn je, aber wir sind noch neugierig und wollen schauen, wie weit wir gehen können“, so das Duo. „Wir hoffen, dass uns Going Home über Norwegen hinaus neue Türen öffnet. Die Tour in Deutschland hat gezeigt, dass es auch dort Platz für unsere Musik gibt. Sehr inspirierend!“ Mit Going Home legen We Met In June ein Album vor, das persönlich und universell zugleich wirkt – Musik, die sich gleichermaßen für den Morgenkaffee, einen stillen Sonnenuntergang oder einen langen Spaziergang am Meer eignet.

For those who haven’t met you yet – can you tell us a little about your beginnings as We Met In June? How did your different musical journeys come together to form the sound you have today?

We Met In June: „We Met In June started very naturally. Both of us had been making music on our own for years before we met at a talented show back in 2018 in Norway where we both ended up in the final. Gjest mostly with bands and producing, and Sara through singing, writing and playing piano. We had actually been dating for two years before we started playing with each other and it did take a couple of tries before our musical worlds clicked, but when it did it really exploded. Sara ́s dad is American, so he would naturally show her a lot of LA folk-rock from the 60s and 70s – Fleetwood Mac (her favorite band), Crosby, Stills & Nash, Neil Young – and those sounds really shaped the way she wrote and sang. Gjest, on the other hand, comes from an interestingly diverse music background; he grew up listening to a lot of acoustic music like Alison Krauss and Nickel Creek, which his dad (who’s also a musician) introduced him to, and at the same time Gjest was a big fan of rock music from the 80s, his favorites being Dire Straits and the Swedish band Europe. Over time, those influences (maybe not the 80s hair metal though) blended into what became our sound – dreamy, organic pop rooted in 70s LA folk-rock and Americana.“

Your debut album Loving Living earned great reviews and even the “Breakthrough of the Year” award at Luttprisen 2024. How did that recognition shape your path and confidence leading up to the new record?

We Met In June: „It was definitely a big motivation boost for us! There’s a lot of resistance and ups and downs in this industry, so receiving something as special as the Luttprisen “Breakthrough of the Year” really meant a lot. It came at the perfect time too – we were in the final stretch of finishing this new record, and that recognition gave us the confidence we needed to push through to the end.“

Your upcoming album Going Home is described as a musical journey to Norway’s west coast, with its mountains, fjords, and young love. What does “home” mean to you personally, and how did that idea guide the songwriting?

We Met In June: „For us, home is our families, each other, and our hometowns. We’re both very family-oriented, and being near the people we love has always been important. After living in Oslo for four years, we felt the pull back to the west coast – to the fjords, the mountains, and to our families. Also, over time, we’ve learned that as people pass away and places change, it’s really the people and memories that make a place feel like home. That awareness shaped the songs on Going Home – it’s about longing, belonging, and reflecting on the moments and people that define home.“

What kind of connection do you have with nature, and do you feel that being based in Norway gives you a different perspective compared to other bands and musicians?

We Met In June: „Living on the west coast of Norway, surrounded by mountains and fjords, has given us a deep connection to nature. It’s woven into our daily lives. I (Sara) need nature close by – every morning, I take a walk to clear my mind, remind myself why I do what I do, and stay grounded. For Gjest, there’s nothing better than a slow day out in nature, or relaxing on the back porch watching the sun go quietly down behind the mountains, whilst playing the guitar. That connection flows directly into our music – the beauty of the landscape, as well as its occasional drama, inspires both the mood and textures of our songs. Yeah, maybe that does make our music a bit unique compared to bands in cities.“

You worked with Grammy-nominated mixer Marc Daniel Nelson, who has collaborated with Fleetwood Mac and Jason Mraz. How did his touch influence the overall sound and atmosphere of the album?

We Met In June: „Working with Marc was amazing. He has such a deep understanding of both sound and music, and his touch really brought the songs to life. He’s all about the little details, getting those final few percent that make the mix sound super-clear, warm and timeless.“

The press text mentions themes of love, self-doubt, and bittersweet nostalgia. What kind of emotions do you hope listeners will carry with them after experiencing Going Home? These are also all emotional states in which one can easily lose oneself. How do your new songs
can help us deal with these emotional states?

We Met In June: „With Going Home, we hope listeners walk away with a sense of connection and comfort. It’s music meant to lift you up, even when it leans into melancholy. We write about emotions we all experience, and they can feel overwhelming at times, but there’s almost always something uplifting in our songs. I think maybe it’s our way of dealing with life. Music has always been a way for us to process feelings and reflect on life’s moments, and that’s exactly what we hope this record can do for others.“

Looking at your journey so far – from your debut to touring across Scandinavia and Germany, and now releasing Going Home – where do you feel you stand right now as artists, and where do you hope this album will take you next?

We Met In June: „Looking back, we’ve grown a lot – not just as musicians, but as people. Every challenge has taught us more about our strengths and how we can improve. Right now, we feel more confident in who we are as artists than when started, but we’re still learning and we’re curious – about new ideas, and how far we can push ourselves if we fully dive into this way of life. We hope Going Home will help us reach listeners beyond Norway. Touring in Germany was eye-opening and showed us that there’s a place for our music outside of Norway also. Very inspiring!“
